Overview
The confusion between Mbps and MBps is extremely common and causes many people to think their internet is slower than it actually is. This article explains the difference clearly.
Mbps — Megabits Per Second
Internet speed is measured in Mbps (megabits per second). ISPs, speed tests, and routers all use this unit. 1 megabit = 1,000,000 bits.
If your plan is 100 Mbps, it means 100 megabits of data can transfer per second.
MBps — Megabytes Per Second
File sizes and download managers show progress in MBps (megabytes per second). 1 byte = 8 bits, so:
100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MBps
This means a 100 Mbps plan downloads files at approximately 12.5 megabytes per second.
- 50 Mbps plan → ~6.25 MB/s download speed in your browser
- 100 Mbps plan → ~12.5 MB/s download speed
- 150 Mbps plan → ~18.75 MB/s download speed
Why Does This Cause Confusion?
Download managers and browsers show speed in MB/s (megabytes). Speed tests show Mbps (megabits). The 8× difference makes the connection seem slower than it is to many users. Always check: is the unit lowercase 'b' (bits) or uppercase 'B' (bytes)?
